Black Ruby Barb, Pethia nigrofasciata

Juvenile Black Ruby Barbs closely resemble the Tiger Barb, which -- I think -- gives them a bad reputation. While Tiger Barbs can be somewhat aggressive and nippy, the Black Ruby Barb is nothing of the sort. These are peaceful, mellow barbs that are not at all nippy. A relatively plain fish while young, the males darken into a jet black fish with a brilliant red head as they mature. Female Ruby Barbs will maintain their stripped pattern, though some individuals also darken.
Ruby Barbs make excellent additions to the planted aquarium, and should not bother most plants. They are active, shoaling fish, and should be maintained in a group of at least a half dozen individuals, which will help them show their best colouration, as well.
